Correspondence, 1877-1888.

Letters written to Tolles by her sisters and female friends, who reside primarily in Houston and Austin, Texas, but also in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, and the Dakota Territory. The letters touch on domestic life, family news and health, and local economic and social conditions. Specific topics include the weather, crops, sewing and quilting, cultivating house plants, and childrens' health. Several letters written by mothers describe their grief over the deaths of their infant children. Other letters applaud Katie for caring for a child whose mother is recently deceased. A number of letters from Katie's young sisters discuss their schooling, activities, and friends, and include drawings. There are also letters from Tolles' father, N.C. Strong, who writes about his conversion to Christianity, his consequent desire to remain sober, and the difficulty of finding work as a printer in the midst of a printers' strike in Texas, Missouri, and Kansas (1886). The collection also includes a few newspaper articles, envelopes, and a small amount of financial material belonging to Frank Tolles. Transcripts of the letters are also present. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture. (00-441).
